If summer, then lavender

Ha nyár, akkor levendula

At the end of June and beginning of July, Hungary dresses in purple. Lavender fields are filled with visitors at this time, and the air is permeated with a characteristic, soothing scent.

Most people know this Mediterranean plant in the form of scented sachets, soaps, or essential oils, but lavender is capable of so much more. By choosing the right variety and food-grade flowers, we can not only admire it, but also use it as a unique ingredient in the kitchen.

Which lavender is edible?

This is one of the most important questions.

For gastronomic purposes, English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is primarily recommended. Its flowers have a finer, milder aroma than other lavender varieties, which is why they pleasantly flavor food and drinks. It is important that we only use food-grade, chemical-free grown lavender.

Lavender is not just fragrant, but a special spice too

Lavender's taste is simultaneously:

  • floral,
  • slightly citrusy,
  • delicately spicy,
  • slightly reminiscent of rosemary.

Since it is an intensely aromatic plant, it is always worth using in small quantities. A pinch of lavender is enough to add a special character to a recipe.

What can we make from lavender?

The number of possibilities is almost infinite.

Drinks

  • lavender tea
  • lavender syrup
  • lavender lemonade
  • iced tea
  • cocktails
  • gin and tonic with a special twist

Desserts

  • lavender cookies
  • muffins
  • panna cotta
  • ice cream
  • cheesecake
  • gingerbread
  • macarons

Breakfasts

  • lavender honey
  • lavender sugar
  • oatmeal
  • granola
  • yogurt with fruit

Savory dishes

Although less known, lavender also goes well with savory dishes.

It is especially delicious:

  • with goat cheese,
  • with grilled chicken,
  • with lamb,
  • with roasted vegetables,
  • in Mediterranean spice blends.

Lavender tea – a calm end to the day

Lavender tea has been a known herbal tea for centuries.

Many people drink it in the evening when they want to slow down and relax a little.

Lavender can contribute to:

  • relaxation,
  • a calm evening routine,
  • recharging after stressful days.

Its mild, floral taste is pleasant on its own, but it is also an excellent choice with lemon or honey.

Why is lavender so popular?

Lavender was highly prized even in ancient times.

Its scent is still often used in:

  • aromatherapy,
  • bath products,
  • essential oils,
  • massage oils,
  • diffusers.

For many, its characteristic scent evokes calm, relaxation, and the atmosphere of summer evenings.

Lavender and digestion

Lavender conquers with more than just its scent.

It is traditionally used as a digestive herb, especially:

  • after heavy meals,
  • in case of bloating,
  • for sensitive stomachs.

Of course, it is not a miracle cure, but as part of a balanced lifestyle, it can be a pleasant addition to everyday life.

Lavender lemonade – a summer favorite

If you haven't tried it yet, it's worth making at least once.

Lavender lemonade is simultaneously:

  • refreshing,
  • unique,
  • slightly floral,
  • a spectacular drink to serve guests.

With fresh lemon, mint leaves, and ice cubes, it is a true summer delicacy that both children and adults enjoy consuming.

What should we pay attention to when consuming it?

Although lavender is a natural ingredient, it is worth following a few rules.

✔️ Only use food-grade lavender.

✔️ Less is more – in too large a quantity, its taste can become bitter.

✔️ Avoid using flowers sold as ornamental plants that have been treated with chemicals.

A plant that indulges both body and soul

There are few medicinal herbs that can be used so versatilely.

Lavender is:

  • a beautiful ornamental plant,
  • a special spice,
  • a delicious tea ingredient,
  • an ingredient for refreshing drinks,
  • a popular flavoring for desserts,
  • and it can also be a pleasant evening relaxation companion.

It is no coincidence that we fall in love with it again and again every summer.
