What happens to your body when you relax?

Aaah, relaxation. It is something we know we need to do consciously from time to time to avoid stress and burnout. There is no doubt that relaxing has a positive effect on the mind. But what happens to our bodies when we relax?

Here we look at the reactions triggered in our bodies when we take a little time for ourselves.

The relaxation response

The relaxation response is the name given to what happens when our parasympathetic nervous system takes control of our body.

When you feel safe, the relaxation response is activated and blocks the effects of your body's stress response.

What is the parasympathetic nervous system?

The parasympathetic nervous system starts in the brain and extends with long fibers that connect to specific neurons near the organ they are intended to affect. The parasympathetic nervous system affects the eyes, the tear glands that produce tears, the salivary glands, the nerves in the stomach, and the nerves leading to the bladder. The sympathetic nervous system is the one that produces the "fight or flight" response in a stressful situation.

During this response, a large amount of adrenaline is released from the adrenal glands, the heart rate increases, the pupils dilate, and the amount of blood pumped through the body increases. All these effects allow you to be ready to run if necessary.

The parasympathetic nervous system takes over as soon as you feel safe and relaxed.

So, what are the effects of the parasympathetic nervous system?

When the parasympathetic nervous system takes control, it regulates the functions of your organs and glands while you are relaxed, which is beneficial for both your mental and physical health.

Your heartbeat slows down

When you are relaxed, the parasympathetic nervous system releases a hormone called acetylcholine.

This slows down your heartbeat and helps your body conserve energy.

Cortisol levels decrease

Cortisol is a hormone that helps the body handle stressful situations. If it remains high for a long time, it can cause high blood pressure, disrupt sleep cycles, cause mood swings, use up a lot of energy, and cause the body to store fat.

As soon as you relax, your body works to return cortisol levels to normal, which is good for your overall health and well-being.

Your memory improves

Theta brainwaves are associated with relaxation, and research has shown that stronger and longer-lasting memories are created when the brain is influenced by these waves.

Your brain will think more clearly

Stress chemicals called cortisol and adrenaline disrupt the balance of brainwaves. Relaxation helps stop overactive brainwaves and restores balance, allowing the brain to regulate itself and leaving you in a calm state of mind.

Digestion gets back on track

When you are in a "fight or flight" response, digestion stops as larger muscles are prioritized. Stress can sometimes lead to digestive problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Relaxation reverses this process and gets the digestive system working again.

Your breathing slows down

When you are in a panic, your breathing speeds up. Breathing too fast can lead to low carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which can cause dizziness and weakness.

Relaxation slows your breathing so you can get all the oxygen you need. If you feel short of breath due to stress, try some meditation techniques to help you reach a state of calm. Try to breathe deeply and slowly through your nose. When your attention wanders, bring it back to your breathing.

Your muscles relax

When you feel threatened, either physically or mentally, your muscles tense up. This is also part of the fight or flight response, which physically prepares you for either option. When you feel relaxed, this tension eases.

Relaxation techniques

Of course, it's easy to talk about what your body does when you relax, but sometimes it can be hard to know how to get there, especially if you feel like you have a lot to do. Some good ways to relax include the aforementioned meditation techniques, a long hot bath, listening to relaxing music, yoga, or simply going outside and taking a walk.
