Amla powder is made from the ground leaves of the Indian gooseberry. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries for everything from diarrhea to jaundice.
In a 2009 study, researchers found that the topical application of a herbal solution containing amla powder was more effective at stimulating hair growth.
A 2017 preliminary study on mice found that a proprietary herbal blend containing amla powder could stimulate hair growth in people experiencing hair loss.

The first step is to mix the powder with something. Perfect choices for this include:
- Vegetable oils
- Coconut oil
- Water
- Milk
- Water
If you use oil as a base, follow these steps:
- Pour 4-5 tablespoons of oil into a pan.
- Heat the oil over low heat.
- Stir in 1 tablespoon of amla powder and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool.
- Strain out the remaining powder and discard it.
- When the oil feels warm—not hot—gently massage it into your scalp and hair.
