Histamine belongs to the group of biogenic amines and is one of the breakdown products of histidine, a substance classified as a protein building block. Histamine is broken down by the DAO (diamine oxidase) enzyme. In people who produce reduced amounts of this enzyme, consuming histamine-rich foods causes allergy-like symptoms.

Although the number of people suffering from allergies is increasing worldwide, genuine allergies are not always behind the characteristic symptoms. Histamine found in foods may be to blame, as not everyone can tolerate it.

In some people, there is an imbalance between histamine and the enzyme called diamine oxidase (DAO), whose function is to break down histamine. When the enzyme works properly, we do not even notice that we have consumed histamine. However, if it is not sufficiently effective, histamine accumulates in the body, triggering characteristic complaints such as itching, a runny nose, shortness of breath, nausea, or migraine-like headaches.

The human body itself also produces histamine and stores it in certain cells of the blood and tissues. Histamine helps defend against foreign substances and, among other things, regulates gastric acid production and intestinal movements. As soon as the body comes into contact with a substance it wants to defend itself against, it releases increased amounts of histamine, and an allergic reaction develops. As part of this process, lymphatic circulation and blood supply are also stimulated. The most visible effect of histamine occurs when we are stung by a nettle: our skin becomes red and very itchy. The moment the plant’s hairs touch our skin, histamine is released. The release of larger amounts of histamine (more than 10 mg) causes an acute allergy-like reaction in almost everyone. However, in approximately 1–3 percent of people, the aforementioned symptoms occur even with a lower histamine load. Alcohol and medicines that block the enzyme responsible for breaking down histamine can further worsen the patient’s condition by increasing the concentration of histamine in the body. Since the DAO enzyme is found mainly in the mucous membrane of the small intestine, its activity may be inhibited by various intestinal diseases.

The main ingredient of DAOfood Plus® capsules is a protein extract containing 7% diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme, in the form of enteric-coated pellets. It also contains Japanese pagoda tree extract with a high quercetin content and vitamin C.
