MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane , is known by many names, such as DMSO2, methyl sulfone, or dimethyl sulfone. MSM is an organic form of sulfur found in nature. It is present in many plants and animals, and is also present in the human body.
During the decay of phytoplankton, MSM dissolved in the seas eventually enters the atmosphere through seawater evaporation. From the atmosphere, it returns to the ground via precipitation, allowing plants to absorb it.
We obtain most of our MSM through food. This includes vegetables (plants rich in MSM include onions, garlic, broccoli, and cruciferous vegetables) as well as animal products such as milk and eggs; however, subjecting these products to high temperatures reduces the MSM concentration. Various seeds and nuts also contain it. It has been used as a dietary supplement for many years.
