Detailed product description
Brazil nuts are an excellent source of selenium, a mineral important for the proper functioning of the immune system and the thyroid gland.
How many Brazil nuts should you eat to achieve the desired effect?
The recommended daily intake of selenium has changed slightly over the years; currently, an intake of 80 micrograms (0.08 mg) is recommended. Depending on its origin and size, a single Brazil nut can contain up to 100 micrograms of selenium, but measurements show a fairly wide range, typically between 40 and 90 micrograms per nut. Consequently, consuming 1-2 nuts is more than enough.
The question often comes up: I love Brazil nuts, and I accidentally ate too many again. What will happen to me?
Based on many years of experience and regular "sensory evaluations," we can fortunately say that we are still alive, but we do not recommend regular overdosing of selenium, as it is a fat-soluble nutrient. (Typically, the recommended daily maximum is about 5 nuts for an adult and 2-3 nuts for a child.)
Another interesting question is whether to buy organic or conventional Brazil nuts if you are purchasing the product for selenium supplementation? We find that there is an extremely small difference between the two versions (which cannot be said for many other nuts); the size of the nut can influence the selenium content much more (and in many cases, it happens that you receive an organic product, but for cost-effectiveness reasons, the merchant does not include the organic documentation).
If you would like to snack on Brazil nuts after all this but find the quantity too large, then buy trail mix or sport mix.
