Corn is one of our oldest grains. It originates from Central America, where indigenous peoples used it in countless ways, including popping it.
Corn and popcorn quickly spread around the world. Their simplicity and affordability contributed to this. The first popcorn-making machine was made in the 19th century, and its popularity has remained unbroken ever since.
Popcorn is made when the water inside the kernels boils due to heat, creating internal pressure that escapes from the kernel with an accompanying explosion.
Significance and effects After popping, the corn kernels retain their nutritional value. They are considered a whole grain and contain almost no protein or fat, only pure carbohydrates (in the form of starch). Their glycemic index is lower than that of other average snacks, and their calorie content is also relatively low (this also depends greatly on the preparation method).
Directions for use: Pop the corn kernels using a popcorn machine or in a covered pot over a fire. The finished popcorn can be seasoned, tossed in cold-pressed oil, or in melted, seasoned vegetable margarine.
