Detailed product description
Oats began their history as a weed, and during the Roman Empire they began to be cultivated in large quantities, primarily as animal feed. Nowadays, they are most commonly used in flaked form, as porridge, or as flour, but in Belgium they are even used to brew beer.
Significance and effects:
Thanks to its fiber content, it has a beneficial effect on cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It slows the absorption of sugar in the intestines and gastric emptying, reduces hunger, and increases the feeling of fullness; therefore, those wishing to lose weight may benefit from eating oats as a side dish instead of rice. It is also worth including in the diet of people with diabetes.
It also supports bowel function and reduces constipation symptoms thanks to its fiber content.
Research in dermatology has also reported its beneficial effects, and it may have a general anti-inflammatory effect.
Among the vitamins and minerals, it contains vitamins E and B1-, B5- and B9-vitamin, iron, and magnesium. It has a high protein content compared with other cereals.
Not recommended for people with gluten intolerance! Although oats do not contain gluten, they are often grown together with wheat, rye, or barley, so they can easily become contaminated with gluten.
Use: Cook and serve as a side dish or porridge, with vegetables or fruit, sweet or savory. It can also be used to prepare stuffed or layered dishes. Cooking time: approx. 10–15 minutes.
